I have recently been providing consultancy work advinsing the Napier estates team on the upgrading of LEAX lighting Control panels. The Main lecuture theatres at the Craiglockhart campus have bespoke LEAX lighting control panels providing DSI control of lighting along with integration of centralised emergency lighting from an invertor supply. The panel has inputs from fire alarm systems one way integration of the crestron control systems via RS232 and a LEAX control panel.

LEAX Controls went into administration some time ago and hence support and spares are in limited supply.

The original design of the system used a number of DSI fittings for emergency use from the inverter which caused a number of fault conditions were the DSI ballasts will not provide the correct level of emergency illumination.

The estates department picked this up in testing and called us in to help!

The designed solution is using some of the new mode Lighting EDIN din rail range of products.

Dan Aberdeen our senior engineer travelled up to the north west of Scotland near gairloch to complete the programming of a unique luxury redidential project at Slattadale on the banks of Loch Maree.

The Lighting design for the project was carried out by Gavin Fraser of Foto-ma and utilized a wide variety of types of luminaires in the complex lighting scheme.

The system control used the mode evolution system throughout.

Energy saving light bulbs have taken over the world in the last couple of years so much so that later this year (2009) the major retailers in the UK plan to remove filament light bulbs from there shelves.

However in most projects with lighting controls low energy light bulbs are not to be found. In fact most systems do not support them.

Dimmable energy saving light bulbs are still in the early days of development and are not yet as cost effective as their non-dimmable predecessors.

Lighting control systems can however give significant energy savings.

Control empowers correct usage of multiple fittings. With more circuits to control only the lighting that you need for a task need be turned on saving 100% on lighting that is not required.

Off during non-activity: Using timed off’s and proximity sensors in a lighting control system we can ensures that lights are not left on when the need not be.

Daylight harvesting: Daylight harvesting allows lights to be automatically dimmed to a level dependant on the amount of natural light reaching the target area. This saves in energy usage as the quantity of additional lighting used is limited to what is required exactly.

Dimming at full power: Not running lamps at 100% can result in massive extension of lamp life.

Ingleby Gallery celebrates its 10th anniversary this summer and moves to a new building in central Edinburgh at 15 Calton Road, behind Waverley train station.

Founded in 1998, Ingleby Gallery maintains an ambitious program of exhibitions and off-site projects by established and emerging artists. In the past 10 years, it has secured a reputation as one of the country’s leading private galleries, renowned for the quality of its exhibitions and publications. The Gallery represents artists of international standing, whilst also introducing and supporting artists at earlier stages in their career.

Lighting Control provided data proofing, programming specification and programming work on the Evolution Mode lighting system installed in the new gallery.

The system is a trailing edge dimming system connected to a number of three channel track lighting circuits. The Lighting must be flexible to accomadate the changes of exhibits within this white gallery space.

The control system designed allows the users to set-up the desired lighting levels at the setup stage of each change of exhibition or individual exhibit. Once satisfied with the lighting levels in a specific gallery the users can save the changes they have made and recall the same lighting scene for the duration of the exhibition. The system extends to allowing the saving of two scenes per area to allow a time of day change to the feel of the space.

In addition to this evolutions astronomical clock allows the gallery to be open to passers by until late into the evening the larger art works can be viewed from Edinburgh Bridges in through the windows.

The baths had been lying empty since the early eightys until local businessmen came up with a grand plan to reinstate the building and rehouse the dovecot tapestry company.

The lighting control for the project is Mode lighting Tiger system. With a number of independant systems running in parrallel throughout the different spaces.

The re-development has attracted media and local interest in Edinburgh due to the unique historical value of the original building and the company that now takes it as their new home!
